Birkbeck College, University of London

Dr. Joel McKim is Senior Lecturer in Digital Media and Culture and the Director of the Vasari Research Centre for Art and Technology. He is also the director of Birkbeck’s MA Digital Media programmes. His work focuses on the study of digital images and the impact of digital technologies on architecture, art and design. He was recently a Visiting Research Fellow at the V&A Research Institute working on a project entitled "A Prehistory of Machine Vision: Exploring the V&A Computer Art Collection." He’s the author of Architecture, Media and Memory: Confronting Complexity in Post-9/11 New York and is currently working on his second book entitled Rendered: Digital Animation in Art, Architecture and Design.

Dandelion Journal Student Research

This project relates to Birkbeck School of Arts postgraduate research online journal Dandelion, founded in 2010 with support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The journal’s mission is to create training and professional opportunities for postgraduate research students, with a sustainable editorship structure that incorporates academic staff as well as post-graduate research students, an updated web space, and a wider range of contributors and work. The result is a student-led online space for research, creative practice, training, interviews, and reviews from Birkbeck and other EHCN institutions, underpinned by core skills training on journal editing and mentorship for events organizing.

Dandelion launched at an event for Birkbeck Arts Week (May 2021) and released a first special issue in October 2021.

Drawing Blood Podcast

The podcast 'Drawing Blood,' planned and co-hosted by Birkbeck College's Christine Slobogin and the Courtauld Institute's Emma Merkling, aims to ask stimulating questions and open up discussions about the intersections between visual culture and histories of death, medicine, surgery, the body, and related areas such as spiritualism and the occult. The podcast explores topics ranging from Victorian protoplasm photographs to medieval paintings of surgeon-saints Cosmas and Damian. The following questions have inspired the desire to create this podcast: Why are humans so fascinated by morbidity? What are some of the feelings we have surrounding the body and its permeability, and why do we feel them? What can histories of death, illness, and the body tell us about other aspects of culture, like literature and art, what it means to be human, and vice versa? How do different cultures deal with these questions and emotions, both in the present and the past?

Digital Experimentations and Technological Transformations: Interviews with (Post) Pandemic Theatre and Performance Artists

This interview-based research project explores how artists have experimented with digital technologies to adapt to the new realities produced by the Covid-19 pandemic, in order to sustain and innovate their practices. The project builds on the collaboration generated by the OSUN Digital Theatres Collaborative Network Course (led by Dr Ramona Moss and Dr Nina Tecklenburg) to create an accessible archive of digital experimentations and transformations in theatre and performance practice, featuring artists from Austria, Colombia, Spain, South Africa and USA.
