A New Cosmology for the Anthropocene

In the creative component of their thesis, Zoe Knable explored how a new cosmology for the Anthropocene can be conceptualized through sonic explorations of the swamp. Reflecting on the artistic work of sound artists and ecologists such as Urbonas Studio, Maryanne Amacher, and Peter Kilham, Knable ventured into the swamp to create a critical vocabulary for our time – one which transgresses the boundaries of the nature/culture divide. This microgrant enabled Zoe to engage with these questions by visiting the swampland of New Orleans, Louisiana, and collaborating with musicians and locals to record music and interviews about swamp life. In the project, the Zoe’s engagement with swamplands as an aesthetic, ecological, and political space, connects to the rich history and music scene of New Orleans. Zoe presented their creative research through the printing of images from the swamp and using the college's speakers to present the audio from this experience during the Senior Thesis Creative Component Exhibition.
