Introduction to Computer Vision for Art History

April 26, 2023 - May 31, 2023
Faculty-led

Artificial intelligence and image analysis through computer vision seems to be everywhere. Likewise, image creation and image analysis with computer vision has been revolutionary for visual studies and digital art history. With the creation of images with algorithms such as Dall-e, face recognition and image classification, we are at a turning point in the history of digital art with respect to visual language processing. This workshop will introduce participants to implementations of image processing in art history, especially the mechanics of computer vision in relation to art history. We will use different collections of images to explore what digital tools can tell us about representation, pictorial and visual data. Attendees will learn the basics of computer vision and image processing through introductory sessions and the creation of a project.
