Digital Prophecy: Creating a Religion for the Modern Age

Faculty-led
January 16, 2024 - January 17, 2024

This creative research component of the student’s senior thesis centered around the question of how speculative fiction writing techniques can be used to create compelling religions. In the written component, the student looked at how the Church of Scientology evolved following science fiction writing traditions. For the creative component, the student created a durational performance piece that culminated in the creation of their own religion. While the idea for this new religion was rooted in creative writing and science fiction traditions, the student also created and performed rituals that addressed powerful issues such as technology, gender, and the apocalypse. The project’s aim was to foster community through rituals and other non-traditional means of connection. The project culminated in a final religious service, as well as a presentation of the project documentation during the Creative Component Exhibition.
